One day, my daughter Zeel asked why I don’t make EVS worksheets for her. So far, to make learning practice fun for her, I had created worksheets and hands-on activities for English, Hindi and Maths subjects. That’s how my blog site www.nesteleze.blogspot.com was born.  Her question made me thinking. And it was very true. Although I have been a Science student, somehow the EVS topics don’t interest me the way other subjects do, with regards to designing an activity or worksheet. So, in crafting something “different” as per Zeel’s demand, I had to motivate myself to design something for “EVS”. And that’s how SEVEN BERRIES was born. Centered on Zeel’s likes. Any connection do you see? Who is Elizabeth? Well, she will come into picture. Lets first talk about the beginning word of this writing piece - EIGHT. My daughter Zeel, turned eight recently. Is it a milestone? Hmm...I am not sure. But I do vividly remember her Life Skills teacher mentioning that kids at this age, in class two, want to achieve milestones. They want to make something, create a work by themselves. And, they will come to the parent, show it proudly, expecting an acknowledgement. As parents, we must pause whatever we are doing, look at the child and respond. Do not ignore.  So while she attempts to accomplish certain works (of art I believe, which is her interest area), a thought entered and sat in my mind. Firmly. At eight now, she, my daughter, should embark on the journey of reading children’s books/novels. Since the age of three, we have exposed her to stories. That's what kids love. Don't they? Experimentation starts with them. Churning a hole in the eraser, cutting craft papers, tearing old papers, gluing up...that's the way to their novel creations.  At the start of class two of my daughter, I took upon some inquests to build a couple of tools to learn spellings (English). Strawberry cards, Tweety spin wheel and Kitty mini book. Artful they were, but fit for one time use. To practice spellings I had to go beyond.After a lull period in between, thanks to the interim Dictations that commenced in the online sessions, urgency set in and my mind was forced to think some way to help Zeel learn and practice the spellings. Something that was SUSTAINABLE.  Now, we all know that to face a problem at hand, we are taught to break it into smaller issues. At every milestone, she would turn her head towards me and remark with joy "Mumma dekho Daddy pig ban gaya,Mumma dekho Peppa pig ban gaya!..........".   I flipped my eyes to see her achievement and matched her joy every time. It's IPL season now. My eyes lay on the IPL match while her's were on the puzzle.  Time flew and I got out first :) Tired, I moved on to get ready to sleep. She sat, not blinking an eye.  The clock was also waving past 10 in the night. Soon, Zeel came running and poured out all her excitement with "Mera ho gaya Mumma. Puzzle ban gayee!" I asked in disbelief - "Ban gayee puzzle?". She said YES.  I couldn't control confirming once again " Papa se help lee?". She firmly said NO.  Once, the pursuit of Hindi story books landed me to the Storyweaver.org.in website. Rummaging through it, I chanced upon a story "Gulli ka gazab pitara". At that instant, I knew this had to be a part of my elezes(activities based on educative learning with zeal) with my daughter Zeel. And I am glad that this Role play activity is first of its kind  to engage in, as Zeel moves onto 2nd grade. Not to forget that it encompasses family and fun. Pratham books is a storehouse of books. When you read "There's more to Storyweaver than just reading" you truly believe it. How otherwise, would I have discovered this Hindi book? Loads of English books have been translated to many regional languages. Now, since the book is in digital form, I have taken the liberty to print it for my daughter, to get a touch, flip and read feel. I have always preferred physical books than the e-versions. When was the last time our children went out to play? The year 2020 restricted us. Moreover, it was an emotional roller coaster ride last year. Isn't it? So now, in the brighter days, let our children get a breath of fresh air. Let them push open the doors, and run to the nearby garden. And, as the emotions run high, we will record them in a visual representation, playing upon the concept of DT. What's DT? Those who are aware of or use Design Thinking (DT) in their professions, know, that, the Empathy Map helps to decode a User's view, thinking and feeling about your product or service. No, we are not making an Empathy Map to decipher what the child wants (just as a User wants in DT parlance). But, our activity does have a tinge of DT. The child will draw up an "Expression Sketch" of her actions and emotions. Why do this activity? Experience it and you will know ! Can you believe?  My daughter designed an activity for me!  I had a big proud smile on my face...... If you still can't believe, see the snaps here.  Isn't it a wonder that the child worked out something like this! . So, she is observing, she likes the activities I do with her. I think  so. :)  It was yesterday afternoon when, Zeel had been telling me multiple times that she had designed activity for me. With a shine in her eyes, with happiness in her heart. That seemed to convey her feeling, that her mother would also love to do an activity. Excitingly, she was trying to highlight how it involves writing ( with sketch pens) and colouring. After evening playtime, how much ever I asked her to finish her home work first, she was adamant that I finish the activity. !  Hi! The bees around the world are now back to their homes. From the New Year vacation last week. Like the New Year week, I too had a theme for last week - Rep Spell. Learn and practice English spellings throughout the week. The idea sprang up as I was browsing through websites for spelling related activities. One work caught my attention. And, Rep Spell was born.  Welcome back! A very happy new year! 365 new days added in our kitty. Pick one day, and bring in some variety in your child's knowledge building with this activity. Yes, I feel delighted to share for the first time, Maths activity using a readymade kit. Before I start, I would like to thank my cousin - Dr Namrata Dave, who gifted Zeel, the Place Value learning kit. And, to the company which designed and created it - The VASCSC Science Shop.
