Welcome back!
A very happy new year! 365 new days added in our kitty. Pick one day, and bring in some variety in your child's knowledge building with this activity. Yes, I feel delighted to share for the first time, Maths activity using a readymade kit. Before I start, I would like to thank my cousin - Dr Namrata Dave, who gifted Zeel, the Place Value learning kit. And, to the company which designed and created it - The VASCSC Science Shop. (Read through the end of the post to get link to the website.)
So, the topic is "Place Value". At the time of doing this activity, Zeel was aware of Place Value as she had learnt it in online school sessions. We had made use of a made-at-home Abacus kit.
Let's start then!
---------------------------------
## eleze# 4 Place value
# Material Used #
1) Place Value kit (image attached)
2) A pen
# The Activity #
1) Take out the Task cards from the kit. I took 8 cards related to Ones, Tens and Hundreds. (Plan to take up Thousands later)
2) Hide these
3) Take out the stand and the placards
4) Let the child go on a treasure hunt. Give an oral clue to assist the search.
5) Every time the child finds a Task card, ask her to solve. Let her solve using the placards; arrange the answer on the stand. And then, write it on the Task card.
See a couple of snapshots I have given at the end.
# My views on using the kit #
The large, thick, placards make it easy for the child to hold in hand and, for the Parent to teach. The stand is a thoughtful item as the answer stands there easy to read.
I particularly liked the Task cards - colorful with images. I could have never made these at home. So, a readymade kit is a delight to use!
Can't comment on the comparison between this kit and the usual Abacus kit. I feel one can use any of these to teach Place Value the first time and do the problems frequently. But, one thing I would definitely like to have in the kit, is more of Task cards. To do the problems for up to Hundred Place value, the number of cards provided, are not enough to practice.
You get a pleasant surprise from the kit when you lay down all the placards - Ones, Tens, Hundreds and Thousands on the floor. The book manual mentions to do it. What you see is, a long set of numbers spread from one end of the sitting area to the other end. Both Zeel and I walked up and then down uttering "A for Ascending, A for Aeroplane that goes up, so go from small to big ! D for Descending, D for down, go from big to small ! "
