Christmas holidays are ongoing, this year Santa comes to Mumbai. As he steps down the Mumbai Railway station, the pretty girl, Zeel’s eyes catch him. Almost running upto him, she greets him. Santa smiles with warmth. They exchange few pleasantries, have kanda poha there and then Santa starts a trip in the city, guided by Zeel.
They go to DAV International School. Santa gifts a bag/box of sweets. Teacher obliges. After distributing these, she returns to give the box back to him. Santa politely refuses and asks to hand it over to Zeel. Confused at this, when they move ahead to visit city hospital, she asks about the box. He said that she would come to know later.
At the city hospital too, the nurse gives the box back to him after dispensing. Zeel collects it from her. The outing continues in similar way to the playground. By this time its afternoon, Santa and Zeel are very hungry. Santa is very excited to try Indian food. At a nearby hotel, Zeel orders her favorite Dosa and Idli. Santa wonders at the dishes served. Something folded in a cylinder shape with potato stuffing. And three round white items. As the waiter brought in Sambar and chutney, Santa’s gaze broke with a sneeze. He was overwhelmed, but enjoyed the spicy Sambar.
Rest of the day, both visited a garden, a mall and a farm. Zeel got more and more boxes back. She would drop them all in her princess printed backpack. As evening approached, she made sure that Santa snacked on the Vada Pav. He revered it. Then, as he looked at his watch, he realized that in another thirty minutes, he had to board the train back to home. From his list, the toy store was the last place to visit. He pulled out a box and gave to Zeel asking, if she could visit the toy store and distribute those sweets and all the ones that were left in the previous boxes with her. She was happy and responded positively. After seeing-off him, she went back home and shared the day’s experience with her parents. She also mentioned about the task that Santa gave her. Her mother asked her if she had enough sweets with her for the children in the toy store. There was a question mark on her face - exactly, how many sweets did she have?

So in the above story, what did Zeel do next?
Find out here below!
## eleze# 3 SANTA and SUMS
# Material Used #
1) A4 sheets, sketch/glitter pens
2) Red and white craft paper, cardboard, scissor and crayons
# The Activity #
1) Using the cardboard and red and white craft paper, make small placards of Santa Clause and a girl/boy (image attached). Involve the child with you in this task.
2) In the A4 sheets write Subtraction problems of your choice. Six problems, representing six bags ( or Boxes whatever you decide to call it) for the places Santa and Zeel visited and gifted sweets.
3) In one A4 sheet , at the bottom, write sentence " Zeel (or your child's name) gave ___________________ sweets in the toy store.
4) Ask the child to solve the sums by saying aloud to her how many sweets the BagX (or call it BoxX) had, number of sweets distributed, and so how many were left.
5) Once all the subtraction sums are done, copy these answers in a sheet. After last answer, write "Santa gave an extra box of XX sweets to Zeel( or your child's name) and asked her to give these along with the ones that were left with her."
6) Now, add one by one all the answers from subtraction problems and the extra sweets count from Santa, like as shown below:
Subtraction Answer 1 + Subtraction Answer 2 = Addition answer 1
Addition answer 1 + Subtraction Answer 3 = Addition answer 2
Addition answer 2 + Subtraction Answer 3 = Addition answer 3
and so on till the final addition is done with extra sweets count.
Note - BagX (or BoxX) represents Bag(Box) 1 to 6, XX represents a number that you want to write.
7) Lastly, ask the child to fill in the blank in step 3 above with the final number she got from addition.

Great effort. Adding pictures is a good idea. Also, I loved that Santa got to eat Indian dishes :D
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can actually imagine him at a Vada Pav stall :) :)
DeleteSo creative way of learning...I am sure Zeel might have enjoyed it too...
ReplyDeleteShe did! We actually did a role play. She held Santa placard and I picked up one of the girl. And carried off the conversation between the two :)
